廊下は部屋と部屋とをつなぐだけではない。内と外とのつなぎでありその関係を自在に変化させる。
A corridor not only connects rooms to one another, but also connects the interior and the exterior, changing their relations freely.


例えば縁側がある。庭に面した南側の廊下は、日当たりが良く、戸を放てば縁側である。また廊下に面した部屋の障子を全開にすると、庭から部屋までが一つの空間としてつながる。また部屋が使用中で障子が閉まっていても、庭に面して均質で極上の光を得ることができる。廊下が様々な場面と関連して人の行為により総合的な感性を与える装置となるのである。

For instance, there is a veranda. A corridor on the south side facing the garden is generously lit by the sun, and becomes a veranda when the doors are open. Besides, when all shoji (paper sliding doors) of a room facing the corridor are open, the room and the garden are connected as a single space. Even when shoji are shut while the room is in use, it will be a well-lit room as it faces the garden. Corridors can be a device through which people can experience a variety of feelings depending on situations and people’s acts.
