舞台あれど客席はなし
There is a stage but no seat.


川向こうの舞台には客席は存在していない。客は舞台での表現を総じて概観するのではなく、道を通りすがる際にその断片のみを目撃することになる。西暦593年に創建されたと言われる厳島神社の能舞台にも客席は設けられてはいない。神社を訪れる人びとは、回廊を通りながら神に捧げる奉納の踊りを観賞するのである。作品の頭から最後までを見せるようには出来ていない。

On the stage across the river is no seat for the audience. The audience does not view performances on the stage, but see only its fragments when they pass by. The Noh stage in Itsukushima Shrine that is said to have been built in 593 has no seat either. Visitors to the shrine view the dance dedicated to the god of the shrine while walking along the corridor. It is not arranged so as to show the whole dance from the beginning to the end.
