A ghost without feet was imagined from a shadow reflected on a shoji (paper sliding door).

It is said that the artist who painted a picture of a feetless ghost for the first time in Japan is Ohkyo Maruyama (18th century painter). A shadow bears an image totally different from the real object because it may be distorted, made smaller or enlarged. Small acts can have explosive effects with strong light coming from a source and through “translucent walls.” Such a distortion has something in common with a viewpoint in “Wings of a Stage.”
